LAPD Declares Citywide Tactical Alert Over Zimmerman Protests

On Saturday night, the Los Angeles Police Department declared a citywide tactical alert during a protest in Leimert Park over the George Zimmerman verdict. The alert was not relegated to the PD’s South Bureau, but was broadened to include the entire city; tactical alerts allow officers to be kept after their shifts and can prevent them from attending to low-priority calls. LAPD Sgt. Carlton Brown said that the decision was prophylactic and not in response to any violence. “We think it’s going to remain that way,” Brown stated.
