Limp: Weiner Poll Numbers Shrink

A new Marist poll of the New York City mayor’s race finds a sharp reversal in support for Anthony Weiner. In the last poll, he led Christine Quinn by five points. Now, he trails by nine, marking a 14 point swing after new revelations that his “sexting” with other women continued long after he left Congress.

City Council President Christine Quinn leads the multi-candidate field with 25%. Weiner is second with 16%, with two other candidates each receiving 14%. The rest of the field are in single digits. It is likely the top two candidates will face a run-off after the September primary.

Weiner’s support is likely to shrink further, however. Voters favorable ratings of the scandal-plagued pol have completely reversed. In June, 52% of Democrats had a favorable view of Weiner, against 36% with an unfavorable view. Today, 55% of Democrats have an unfavorable view and just 30% have a favorable view of Weiner.

It is a stunning reversal in just one month. Weiner will probably stay in the race, as he has millions in his campaign account. He ought not be picking out drapes for Gracie Mansion, though.
