Speaking at a Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) dinner Saturday, President Barack Obama asked the CBC to continue “marching” for gun control and other progressive issues.
Obama used recent murders in Chicago to segue to other cities to argue the nation needs more gun laws:
Just two days ago, in my hometown of Chicago, 13 people were shot during a pickup basketball game, including a 3-year old girl. Tomorrow night I’ll be meeting with mourning families in [Washington DC] who now know the same unspeakable grief of families in Newtown, and Aurora, and Tuscon, and Chicago, and New Orleans, and all across the country–people whose loved ones were torn from them without headlines sometimes, or without public outcry.
Obama did not mention the fact that gun crime has increased in cities like Chicago where strict gun control has been stepped up as well. Such laws in Chicago, Washington DC, and NYC make those cities target-rich environments for criminals, who know their victims will rarely–if ever–have a gun to use in response to an attack.
Obama told the CBC he needs them to continue “marching” with him on this issue throughout the remainder of his term as president.
