Speaking at the Navy Yard memorial on September 22, President Obama turned the event into a shameless gun control push.
According to CNN, Obama said he fears there is a “creeping resignation” among Americans to accept such tragedies as the “new normal.”
Obama said he has had to “[grieve] with the families impacted by mass shootings… fives times during his presidency, citing shootings in Ft. Hood, Texas; Tuscon, Arizona; Aurora, Colorado; Newtown, Connecticut; and now the Washington Navy Yard.”
He did not mention that the one commonality between all five of these shootings is that they took place in gun-free zones, but he did mention that he believes more gun control is the answer: “I do not accept that we cannot find a common-sense way to preserve our traditions including our basic Second Amendment freedoms and the rights of law-abiding citizens while at the same time reducing the gun violence that unleashes so much mayhem on a regular basis.”
