Jeff Sessions: We Should 'Respect… Not Undermine' Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul

Appearing on Breitbart News Sunday with Stephen K. Bannon on the Sirius/XM Patriot Channel on Sunday evening, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) threw his weight behind Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz is under attack from the GOP establishment for fighting to defund Obamacare in the Continuing Resolution (CR), along with Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rand Paul (R-KY).

Bannon asked Sessions about the reports from Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace that “top” Republicans in Washington, D.C., were shopping opposition research on Cruz.

“How did we get in the situation where establishment types and their staffs first off come out anonymously and try to cut up Sen. Cruz the other day, and you’ve seen this as you fought this immigration bill sometimes it seems like almost alone, why is it the establishment is reaching out and attacking those members of the House and the Senate that, to people in the Breitbart audience and here at Sirius/XM on the Patriot Channel, seem to be standing up for the American working man and woman?” Bannon asked.

“I mean, what’s so shocking here is what you’re saying, what Sen. Lee is saying, what Sen. Cruz is saying, what Rand Paul is saying. You’re not wild-eyed radicals,” Bannon explained. “You’re making very basic, fundamental arguments backed by analytics about what’s good for the American people and what’s good for the American working man and woman. Why are you guys being attacked?”

Sessions responded that such tactics are unacceptable, as leaders like Cruz, Lee and Paul are fighting for what they believe in. In fact, Sessions argued that they should be applauded for their leadership.

“Well, there’s division sometimes just over tactics like the healthcare bill and how is the best way to get rid of it,” Sessions responded. “We’ve got a new group of very dynamic, determined new Senators that just got elected and they’re not interested in business as usual. They’re pushing an agenda they believe reflected the promises they made to their constituents when they got elected, things that they believe in.”

“I think it’s very great. I think it’s healthy,” he continued. “I think Ted Cruz and Mike Lee and Rand Paul are doing their best every day for the benefit of this country. I agree with them a lot of times on tactics and procedures, sometimes I may not, but all in all, one of the things that has occurred has been that they have been a positive force in slowing down the immigration bill.”

“And in addition, we have far more discussion about Obamacare and the danger of it as a result of their actions than if we just slid on through without rocking the boat,” Sessions stated. “I frankly think people got to understand that this democracy is rough and tumble and people get elected, they promise to do something about the slide of this country and they come here fighting for it, and we ought to respect them and support them and not try to undermine them.”
