After non-essential elements of the federal government shut down on Tuesday, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama canceled a planned Wednesday appearance at an annual Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gala.
According to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, this is the first year Obama will not attend the gala since he was a presidential candidate in 2008.
Actress Salma Hayek will reportedly be honored at the event in Washington along with other influential Hispanic figures.
