A European version of the morning-after-pill, has proven to be ineffectual for women who weigh more than 176 pounds and begins to lose efficacy at 165 pounds. In light of this finding, American women should beware. Plan B One-Step, Next Choice One Dose, and My Way, commonly used emergency morning-after-pills, sold over the counter in the United States, have the same exact dosage and chemical composition as the European counterpart.
The Average American women weighs 166.2 pounds; therefore, the use of the morning after pill will not ensure pregnancy prevention. Non-Hispanic black women in the same age category weigh on average 186 pounds, rendering the pill utterly useless. James Trussell, a professor of public affairs at Princeton reacted to the news with dismay, “There’s a whole swath of American women for whom [these pills] are not effective.”
HRA Pharma, the French manufacturer of the European drug Norlevo, is updating their packaging information for 2014 and will indicate that the pill tends to fail in women with a high body mass index. From 2006 to 2010, a survey published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that 5.8 million American women used the contraceptive drug. The findings were based on research by Anna Glasier, a University of Edinburgh professor of obstetrics and gynecology.
