Gabby Giffords PACs Push for Gun Control Congress, Senate in 2014

Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly plan to use their various PACs to financially support House and Senate candidates who will fight for gun control in 2014.

Their goal is to “change the map” of Congress and make a push toward stricter gun control viable in 2015.

According to USA Today, Giffords and Kelly are looking intently at “about two dozen competitive House contests” and “about a half-dozen Senate races.” They plan to “winnow” these down to the best candidates to support.

Kelly said, “It doesn’t have to be a sea change. We just have to start getting members of Congress to think about their next election differently and know that there is an organization that will support them if there’s a lot of money being spent against them on this issue.”

Giffords and Kelly launched the Americans for Responsible Solutions PAC together in January 2013. Since then, Giffords has launched the Rights and Responsibilities PAC and announced that its first donations will go to Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA).

Both Senators supported an April 2013 bill instituting universal background checks on gun purchases which was defeated in the Senate.
