Poll: Mental Health, Better Parenting, Armed Guards Trump Gun Control

A recently released Reason-Rupe Poll shows that mental health treatment, better parenting, and armed guards at schools trumps more gun control with the majority of Americans.

Published by Reason.com, the poll asked what could have prevented the crime at Sandy Hook Elementary. Twenty-seven percent of respondents said mental health services “were the most important factor that may have prevented [it].”

Following this, “22 percent say better parenting is most critical” and “20 percent say having armed school officials or armed guards on site would have been the most likely way to prevent the tragedy.”

The fourth means of preventing such a tragedy was gun control, which came in at 16 percent.

Viewed by party affiliation, only 10 percent of Republicans and 12 percent of Independents viewed gun control a viable option for making schools safer. But 24 percent of Democrats chose gun control over mental health, better parenting, and armed guards at schools.
