SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 22 (UPI) —
A college student said he paid his $2,000 tuition bill in single dollar bills as a protest over increased tuition at the University of Utah.
Luq Mughal, an electrical engineering undergraduate student, said he works weekends to pay for school and didn’t appreciate a 5 percent increase the school recently announced, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Though Mughal, 21, said he receives a discount because his father is a member of the faculty, the cost of tuition, books and living expenses adds up.
School administrators told the newspaper they have tried to keep tuition low and the university has been cited as a good bargain in higher education. The tuition hike will be used to offer staff a cost-of-living raise.
The cost to attend the University of Utah has more than doubled in the past 10 years, from $2,742 in the 2002-03 school year to $6,511 this year.
