Paul Ryan Won't Challenge Eric Cantor for House Speaker

If Republicans retain control of the House in 2014 and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) retires, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) may have the best chance of defeating House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) to become the next Speaker.

However, that is a fight the former Republican vice presidential nominee does not want to wage. This week, Ryan emphasized that he does not want to be House Speaker and prefers being the Chair of the influential Ways and Means Committee in the House.

According to The Hill, a recent survey of Republicans in the House determined that the “consensus was that the only lawmaker who could defeat Cantor is Ryan.”

Though Cantor, who is far from being a favorite among conservatives and Tea Partiers, will likely be challenged for the Speakership if Boehner retires, he will start off as the favorite with Ryan not in the mix.
