NRA membership among New Yorkers has nearly doubled since Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) signed the SAFE Act gun control package into law in January 2013.
The Buffalo News reports membership growth in the NRA-affiliated New York State Rifle & Pistol Association (NYSRPA) and that membership in that “state affiliate has now surpassed Texas and California to become the largest state NRA chapter in the nation.”
NYSRPA saw its membership go from 22,000 in January 2013 to 41,000 in January 2014.
NYSRPA President Tom King said that while their membership grows every year, it did so “exponentially” in 2013. He said that should send “a message to all the anti-gun politicians.” He stated it should also catch the attention of “all the politicians sitting on the fence, that yes, if they thought that we were [going to be] quiet and this was going to go away without anyone paying any more attention to it, they were just flat-out wrong.”
King said his group has raised over $200,000 in the last year to continue the fight against the SAFE Act. He said some of that money will also be used in races against Republicans who bowed to pressure and signed on to the SAFE Act in the first place.
“The Second Amendment is alive and well in New York state,” King added.
