Newlywed Dies BASE Jumping with Husband in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 10 (UPI) —
A Utah newlywed was killed while attempting a weekend BASE jump with her husband in Utah when her parachute failed to open, a park spokeswoman said.

Park spokeswoman Aly Baltrus said Amber Marie Bellows, 28, of Salt Lake City died Saturday and her body was retrieved Sunday, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. Bellows, an experienced practitioner of the extreme sport, had married Clayton Butler, 29, two weeks earlier, the newspaper said.

The National Park Service said in a release the couple had climbed Mount Kinesava in Zion National Park, where jumping is not allowed, and Bellows was the first to attempt a leap. Her chute didn’t open properly and she plummeted about 2,000 feet to her death.

BASE stands for building, antenna, span and Earth.
