COPS: Man Said He 'Thought Cocaine Wasn't Illegal in Florida'

KEY WEST, Fla., Feb. 27 (UPI) —
Authorities in Florida said a cocaine possession suspect allegedly told police he “thought cocaine wasn’t illegal in Florida.”

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said police responded to a 2 a.m. call from a security guard at the Pier House Resort in Key West about three suspicious people on the property and the sound of a scream, KeysInfoNet reported Thursday.

Officer Darnell Sealy wrote in the arrest report he found the trio of people and Guy Lanchester, 46, of Key West, appeared to be hiding something in his hand.

Less than a gram of cocaine was recovered from the flower pot, police said.

Sealy wrote Lancaster told him he did not think he had committed a crime.

Lancaster was charged with cocaine possession and felony tampering with evidence.

The two people with Lancaster were searched and released, police said.
