Candidates Use Gun Giveaways to Stand Out in 2014

Senator Lamar Alexander’s (R-TN) Republican primary opponent Joe Carr has seized on one good way to differentiate between himself and Alexander–by holding gun giveaways.

Carr just held a contest “in which a Beretta 921a will be given away.” Forty-five thousand Tennesseans signed up for their chance to win it and Carr was able to remind this captive audience: “I don’t know that [Alexander’s] ever sponsored or put forth legislation that helped gun owners.”

According to the Johnson City Press, Carr chose the 921a as a way to both welcome Beretta to the state and to show his support for Tennessean gun rights. As state representative Carr introduced legislation “to nullify…Obama’s gun-grabbing laws.”

Carr said he got the gun giveaway idea from other Republicans who have used them to differentiate between themselves and the incumbents against whom they have run. He specifically cited Georgia Republican Senate candidate Paul Broun, “who is the the middle of his second giveaway.”

“The winner of Broun’s contest will either go home with a Colt…1911 pistol or a Colt Magpul 6920 Flat Dark Earth rifle.” Broun is seeking to fill the seat of retiring Senator Saxby Chambliss (R) who will vacate after the November elections.

At the height of the 2013 gun control push, Breitbart News reported Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) held an AR-15 giveaway.
