U.S. Representative Jared Polis (D-Col.) is funding ballot measures to allow cities and counties to limit fracking in Colorado and it could end up limiting the number of state-level Democrat office holders who are able to retain their offices in November as well.
According to Politico Magazine, Polis “was one of four wealthy Colorado Democrats who pooled their considerable personal resources to create a state-of-the-art [Democrat] political machine” 10 years ago. But as things now stand, his ballot measures could be on the November ballot with Democrats like Governor John Hickenlooper (D) and Senator Mark Udall (D-Col.), making their reelections an uphill climb to say the least.
Udall is crucial for Democrats nationally because his “reelection bid could determine control of the U.S. Senate.”
Natural gas is a $29 billion industry in Colorado and fracking is central to its success. But Polis’ ballot measures are based on the premise that fracking has “pushed many wells closer to houses and schools” in Colorado and opened the door to concerns about “possible long- and short-term health effects.”
Josh Penry is “a former Republican state lawmaker and gubernatorial candidate now working in the oil and gas industry.” He refers to Polis as an “egomaniacal congressman from Boulder” who is “about to jeopardize the reelection of…Udall and…Hickenlooper” because he has “a little money burning a hole in his pocket.”
Penry says that 10 years ago, when the Democrat coalition was being built, “the progressive roundtable would’ve absolutely crushed this kind of idiocy.”
