Mother's Day Weekend Violence Leaves 4 Dead, 22 Wounded in Chicago

Violence erupted during Mother’s Day weekend in Chicago, as four were killed, including a mother of three children. An additional 22 were wounded in the Windy City.

Those killed were a teen of unreported age, who died on Sunday in the late afternoon; a 25-year-old man, killed in a drive-by shooting just before 2 p.m. on Saturday; and a 34-year-old man, found dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

Summer Moore, the murdered woman, was a single mother of three. She was shot in the chest as she stood in her front yard at 8 p.m. Friday. When the shots rang out, the woman’s family was gathered to celebrate a niece who was going to the prom.

Family members described the murdered woman as “happy, beautiful, and ambitious.” Moore was attending school to become a nurse to better her life.

This same family also suffered the shooting murder of a cousin last year–strangely, on Mother’s Day.

Multiple acts of violence occurred on Saturday and Sunday, shootings and stabbings, leaving some dead and others wounded.

Most of the gun violence occurred on Saturday, the day before Mother’s Day, when several people were shot.

The city is clearly earning its new nickname, “Chiraq,” as the death toll mounts on a regular basis. Many parts of Chicago are far more dangerous than actual war zones in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
