On May 15 U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled that Washington DC’s “assault weapons” ban and firearm registration requirements were “constitutionally permissible.”
According to Business Insider, the “assault weapons” ban and handgun registration were challenged in 2011 and a court upheld both, “but…said the city would need to provide better data on the safety implications of applying the same [registration] rules to long guns.”
Current “requirements include that gun owners appear at the police department with the weapon he or she intends to register”–long gun or handgun–“be photographed and fingerprinted, and complete an extensive background check.”
On May 15 Boasberg ruled: “The people of this city, acting through their elected representatives, have sought to combat gun violence and promote public safety. The court finds that they have done so in a constitutionally permissible manner.”
