School District Backtracks on Student's Suspension over Gun Shirt

On May 14, Hindsdale Township School District 86 reversed course “on the [May 6] suspension of a student who wore a T-shirt with an AK-47 on it to school.”

Breitbart News reported that senior Chris Borg–an Eagle Scout–had been given the choice of turning his shirt inside out or being suspended. He chose the latter because he believed turning the shirt inside out violated his First Amendment rights.

At that time, Hindsdale district superintendent Bruce Law described Borg’s shirt as “unsafe and disruptive.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, Law now says the district has “changed its mind about the rectitude” of Borg’s suspension and will “try to differentiate between gun-related images that are lawful and do not promote violence” versus other gun-related images in the future.

Borg’s shirt had an image of an AK-47 on it and “a URL for the website of a Kentucky armory that supports gun rights.”
