Poland Regional High School, Maine, will not allow Army recruit ShaiAne Belinski to wear her military sash in her June 8 graduation ceremony.
An Army recruiter gave Belinski the sash “to mark her enlistment,” and she was going to wear it to show her pride in the military.
According to the Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal, officials at Regional School Unit 16 said the high school’s “dress code does not allow the wearing of military sashes, although [students] are allowed to adorn their caps any way they’d like.”
Superintendent Tina Meserve said the dress code “had been in effect for 14 years, as long as there has been a Poland Regional High School.” She said the idea behind it was to “create a unified graduating body, celebrating the accomplishments of their four years together.”
Belinski believes joining the military is one of her biggest accomplishments, and she told WGME “it’s upsetting” that she cannot wear the sash after “working so hard” to get into the Army.
