WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Speaker John Boehner said he’s not sure whether immigration had anything to do with Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s historic primary loss, despite the fact that David Brat, the economics professor who bested Cantor, spent the final weeks of the campaign talking about almost nothing but that issue.
“We don’t know that [immigration reform] is the issue or was the issue in the election,” Boehner said.
The Ohio Republican was asked whether immigration reform would suffer since it had been attributed as the cause of Cantor’s demise.
“Let me just first debunk the first thing,” Boehner said during a Thursday press conference.
“I don’t believe the first premise of your question,” Boehner continued. “Secondly the issue with immigration reform has not changed. The president continues to ignore laws that he signed into law, violating his oath of office. He did it again with the recent release of these Taliban five. And I remind the president, again yesterday, that every time he does this, it makes it harder to gain the trust of our members to do the big things that need to be done.”
While the Speaker would not attribute Cantor’s defeat to immigration reform, he stressed that he would leave the analysis up to pundits.
“I’m not going to analyze what happened in this election. They’re all different. I am sure at some point people will get a handle around what really happened,” Boehner said.
