Guatemalan Man Caught with Cocaine Cookies in Newark Airport

NEWARK, N.J., June 20 (UPI) — Customs and Border Protection at Newark Liberty International Airport found a secret ingredient in a Guatemalan man’s cookies: three pounds of cocaine.

During a routine inspection of Mauricio Isidro Rivera Hernandez’s luggage on June 5, officers found the baked goods in three of his checked bags. Upon further examination, the officers found 118 oval-shaped cocaine pellets instead of chocolate chips. The cocaine had a street value of approximately $52,000.

Rivera Hernandez has been taken into custody by Port Authority police and is facing drug charges.

“CBP officers remain ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of these dangerous drugs, regardless of the concealment methods employed by these would-be smugglers,” said Robert Perez, director of CBP’s New York Field Operations.
