Seemingly no campaign for President of the United States is complete without a schmaltzy campaign song written by well-meaning, if not exactly musically proficient, supporters. Elizabeth “Liz” Warren’s campaign seems to be no exception. But what might set this song apart is that it is filled with attacks on other Americans, not to mention the occasional curse word.
Past campaigns for president–going all the way back to George Washington, in fact–have had campaign songs, and attacks on a candidate’s opponent is common. But attacks on other Americans in these songs is not as common. But Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has made a career of class warfare, so the attacks on Americans in this song is a fitting tribute.
The clumsy first line in the lyrics of the campaign ditty, Run, Liz, run assures the listener that “America wants our next president to be a woman.” Then, in equally clumsy language, trumpets, “Hey, babe, here’s lookin’ at you sendin’ ’em Elizabeth Warren.”
But it is only seconds before the lyrics stampede right for a global warming theme and the claim that we need someone to face the “Wall Street bullshit, the lobbyist grifting.”
Isn’t that why we hired Barack Obama to “yes, we can” our way out of the “Wall Street bullshit, the lobbyist grifting”?
I guess that didn’t work, huh? Why it would with yet another president is anybody’s guess.
The singer then warbles that Warren is the candidate who will “shoot straight and tell the truth.” But I’d guess that assessment might not include those well-worn tales of her non-existent American Indian ancestors.
The hookless tune goes on to gripe about the way we’ve all been gypped (I think) and “squeezed and hammered” because “the system is rigged”–the latter one of Warren’s latest pronouncements.
The song next attacks rich people, but it hedges by saying “God bless” to those who’ve become rich.
That particular verse is replete with historical fallacy, but it is in keeping with Warren’s claim that rich people didn’t make their money; they essentially stole it from the rest of us.
“So, you’re rich. That’s fantastic, and God bless,” the female singer begins. “But there’s just a couple’a things that Liz Warren won’t let ya forget,” the songstress warns.
“Nobody got rich on their own. That’s nobody. Everybody needs bridges and streets to succeed,” she concludes.
This would be news to our Founders, who made their riches–and most of them were rich men in their day–from a country that was empty of development. There weren’t any “roads, streets, and bridges” here when the Founders arrived to begin to carve a country out of the vast wilderness they found here. And there certainly wasn’t any government footing the bill to make those roads and bridges that were eventually built.
Of course, this message is echoed by President Obama who insisted that whatever Americans have, “You didn’t build that.” It is a left-wing populist message assuring liberals that Elizabeth Warren will take from “the rich” and redistribute it to “the poor.”
In any case, this is all part of a new effort to cajole Warren into running for president. The Massachusetts Senator, though, has disavowed the effort–at least thus far.
After hearing this song, it’s no wonder.
