Anti-Gun Commercial Illustrates Why Gun Laws Fail to Stop Violent Men

On July 29 Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety released a new ad that shows gun laws will not stop violent men who ignore restraining orders.

The New York Daily News reports the ad “was designed to keep pressure on lawmakers to pass tougher gun control laws.” It is airing “in New Hampshire, Arizona, Nevada, and Washington D.C.” as part of Bloomberg’s effort to pressure Republicans into supporting gun control as a solution to “domestic abusers.”

In the commercial a man who has a restraining order against him kicks in the front door to the house of his estranged wife (or girlfriend). Once in the house he grabs the couple’s son, and as the woman steps in to take her son back, the man pulls a gun and shoots her.

Albeit unintended, the message is clear: gun laws will not stop violent men who ignore restraining orders.

As ABC’s The View observed, if the woman had a gun she would have been able to protect herself and her children.
