Steve King: Congress Must Have 'Serious Look' at Impeachment if Obama Enacts Exec Amnesty

Rep. Steve King (R-IA), who had previously predicted on Breitbart News Saturday that the House would start impeachment proceedings if Obama grants more executive amnesty, said Congress must seriously consider impeachment if Obama enacts more grants of executive amnesty.

On “Fox News Sunday,” King said that if Obama, in contravention of federal law, grants millions of work permits and amnesty to illegal immigrant adults, “then we have to start, sit down and take a look at that. Where would we draw the line otherwise if that’s not enough to bring that about then I don’t know what would be.”

“I think Congress has to sit down and have a serious look at the rest of this Constitution and that includes that ‘I’ word that we don’t want to say,” King said. “And I only say that now on this program, because I want to encourage the president, please don’t put America into a constitutional crisis. Please don’t do that. There’s too much at stake in this country to be decided that you can take over the Constitution and write it at will.”

He emphasized that he pushed for changes in the House’s border bill to prevent Obama from causing a constitutional crisis.

“We’ve never seen anything in this country like a president that I’m going to make up all immigration law that I choose and I’m going to drive this thing regardless the resistance of Congress,” he said. “That’s why I pushed so hard to get the DOCA language out into this legislation that we just passed. It says, Mr. President you can’t do this. It’s unconstitutional, and you know it.”

After former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called for impeachment on the pages of Breitbart News, a third of Americans and a solid majority of Republicans support it. Palin has said that more Americans would be in favor of impeachment if they realized what “high crimes and misdemeanors” actually are when it comes to impeachment.

Andrew McCarthy, the former federal prosecutor and author of Faithless Execution: Building the Political Case for Obama’s Impeachment, has said the same thing. 

“Contrary to some less than informed opinion, ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ – the legal standard for impeachment – refers not to indictable criminal offenses but to profound breaches of the public trust by high-ranking officials,” McCarthy wrote. “Once the standard is understood, it becomes easy to see that the president and his underlings have committed numerous, readily provable impeachable offenses.”

Conservatives like Palin, Mark Levin, and Rush Limbaugh have declared that it was foolish to take impeachment off the table like–House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) did–while Obama is threatening to enact unprecedented executive actions. The White House has indicated that Obama would “act alone” on executive orders “by the end of summer.”
