Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) – the political arm of the abortion industry giant – launched its largest ad purchase thus far this cycle against Alaska Republican Senate candidate Dan Sullivan less than 12 hours after he won the GOP primary.
As The Hill reports, Planned Parenthood aims to emphasize Sullivan’s opposition to abortion, government funding for Planned Parenthood, and ObamaCare’s HHS contraception mandate.
PPAF will spend $65,000 over the next 10 days in the campaign against Sullivan, attempting to cast him as anti-women, says Politico Pro.
The digital ads are appearing on social media and prominent Alaska news websites.
“Dan Sullivan would let the government control what you do with your body,” states one ad, while another reads, “Dan Sullivan supports banning nearly all abortions for Alaska women.”
Threatened by the thought of Republicans winning control of the U.S. Senate, PPAF vice president Dawn Laguens said her organization is “wasting no time” getting out its message.
“The road to an anti-abortion Senate runs through Alaska — and with the support of our volunteers, supporters, and donors, Planned Parenthood Action Fund will not let Dan Sullivan drive us down that road,” Laguens said.
Sullivan, considered to be an establishment Republican, is challenging incumbent Sen. Mark Begich (D), who campaigned with Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards last week.
“I am pro choice. Period. No deviation,” Begich said to mostly college-age women during a Women’s Town Hall on August 11, according to the Anchorage Press.
Begich campaigned with Richards to rally the Alaska female vote and, according to his campaign, to talk about the “importance of keeping government and bosses out of women’s health care decisions, women’s privacy, and access to birth control and basic health care in Alaska.”
Pro-life activists, however, are countering against incumbents who refuse to back a ban on abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy, and Begich has been singled out on the issue.
“We will continue to expose Begich’s extreme record on abortion, which includes the promotion of late-term abortions — a radical position that puts him at odds with voters, including women,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee spokeswoman Brook Hougesen.
Begich told the Anchorage Press, “Most Alaskans are pro choice, women and men… The Alaskan voter is more moderate then I think the pundits would like to think. Alaska is more independent.”
Asked why the Republican Party is leaning “so far right when it comes to women,” Richards blamed the “Tea Party wing, which ironically believes in little government except when it comes to women and women’s healthcare.”
Sullivan believes abortion should be available in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger. He praised the efforts of the plaintiffs in the recent Hobby Lobby decision in the Supreme Court and has been endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee.
“Dan Sullivan has been an outspoken leader in the fight to protect innocent human lives in Alaska,” said Carol Tobias, National Right to Life president. “Dan Sullivan will bring his strong pro-life leadership to the U.S. Senate.”
