Ebola Scare Strikes University of Virginia: Patient Tests Negative

Ebola Scare Strikes University of Virginia: Patient Tests Negative

A patient who recently returned from Africa and was exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms tested negative for the virus, University of Virginia president Teresa Sullivan told students Monday evening.

“A person who had recently traveled from Africa arrived at the UVA Medical Center this weekend with symptoms that could be consistent with many illnesses,” Sullivan emailed to the campus, in an email obtained by Breitbart News. ” A preliminary test was negative for Ebola; however, we continue to monitor the patient and conduct additional testing. In the meantime, we have taken all recommended precautions by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to protect our patients, guests, staff, and the public, and we have contacted all appropriate public health authorities. We will release additional information as we know more.”

In a followup update email Sullivan noted the patient tested negative and doctors have ruled out Ebola as the cause of the patient’s illness.

“Final test results have ruled out Ebola as a cause of the patient’s symptoms,” Sullivan noted in the followup update email. “Out of an abundance of caution, we took all recommended precautions by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to protect our patients, guests, staff, and the public. To protect the patient’s privacy, we will not be releasing any additional information.”

The Centers for Disease and Control has warned that it is only a matter of time before Ebola reaches the United States. CDC has provided healthcare providers with a checklist to prepare for the virus’s eventual entrance into the United States, the Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard wrote.

“Every hospital should ensure that it can detect a patient with Ebola, protect healthcare workers so they can safely care for the patient, and respond in a coordinated fashion,” the CDC warned, according to Bedard’s piece.
