Rep. Carolyn Maloney Pushes Irrelevant Gun Laws After Marysville School Shooting

Following reports that Marysville-Pilchuck High School freshman Jaylen Fryberg shot and killed one fellow student and wounded four others at school on October 24, Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) called for the passage of new gun control measures that were irrelevant to the Marysville attack.

Maloney was on MSNBC’s The Ed Show commenting on the incident when she said there have been “20… shootings in schools… since August.”

She then said Congress needs “the political will” to pass an Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) and expand background checks. But neither of these things are relevant to the attack on Marysville-Pilchuck High School because the gunman used a handgun, not an “assault weapon,” and the gunman was too young to pass a background check.

Background checks–whether expanded or in their present form–are irrelevant to the Marysville issue.

Moreover, Maloney argued for more gun trafficking laws in the wake of the Marysville attack. We already have gun trafficking laws and questions regarding gun trafficking are already part of our current background check system. So how would more laws against gun trafficking have changed anything?

On October 11, Breitbart News reported on a Crime Prevention Research Center study which showed that “92 percent” of mass public shootings between January 2009 and July 2014 happened in gun free zones–i.e., colleges, high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, etc.

We are waiting for Congress to garner “the political will” to abolish such zones so law-abiding citizens can defend their own lives and the lives of others.
