Assemblywoman on NYPD Shootings: ‘Extreme Anti-Police Sentiment’ Has ‘Festered’

New York state assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn/Staten Island) condemned the execution-style shooting of two NYPD officers Saturday afternoon in an official statement:

“I am horrified that two of our police officers were fatally shot today in Brooklyn. My heart breaks for their families, their NYPD family, and our entire city, which appears to have descended dangerously close to turmoil. It is well past the time for our mayor and citywide leaders to call for a return to order in our streets, and take a hard stance that that lawlessness and aggression towards police officers will not be tolerated. Extreme anti-police sentiment and public unruliness have been permitted to fester for far too long.”

According to police, the suspect Ismaaiyl Brinsley killed himself after shooting his girlfriend and the two officers Saturday. The New York Daily News reports that Brinsley was a gang member and part of “Black Guerilla Family,”  which vowed to inflict revenge on police for the deaths of black criminal suspects Eric Garner and Michael Brown at police hands.
