Ahead of an expected 2016 Hillary presidential run, Clinton ally John Podesta has announced that he is leaving his White House position.

Since January of 2011 Podesta has worked in the Obama administration as Counselor to the President, overseeing Obama’s energy and climate change policies. The counselor for President George W. Bush was in charge of communications and media.

Podesta’s departure was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, but was foreshadowed by Podesta himself who told Reuters that he would “probably” leave the White House job sometime in February.

The White House operative has been a long-time Clinton ally having worked in Bill Clinton’s White House as both Chief of Staff and deputy chief of staff.

Podesta is also one of the founders of the leftist activist organization, the Center for American Progress, a group that has a history of anti-Jewish statements and has been criticized from open government groups who say the group’s vehement secrecy violates transparency ideals. CAP is also responsible for the leftist website, ThinkProgress.org.
