GOP Rep. Who Gave Spanish SOTU Response Starts PAC to Support Pro-Amnesty Lawmakers

The pro-amnesty House Republican who called for “permanent” immigration reform in his Spanish-language State of the Union response has created a political action committee to support other pro-amnesty Republicans.

On January 14, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) registered his “What a Country!” political action committee “to raise money for those Republicans who might need some financial support for taking a moderate immigration tack,” according to the Miami Herald.

“What a Country recognizes that the United States is the land of opportunity, where anyone who comes here and works hard and plays by the rules can get ahead,” Curbelo recently told the Herald. “It will support candidates who understand the importance of overhauling our nation’s immigration laws to secure our borders, promote legal immigration and reward those who contribute to our economy.”

The outlet noted that Curbelo said potential beneficiaries could be Republicans who, like him, ‘voted against punishing people who were brought to this country as children and who are de facto Americans.’”

Last year, former George W. Bush Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and Charlie Spies, who ran the largest pro-Mitt Romney super PAC during the 2012 election cycle, started the Republicans for Immigration Reform Super PAC to give air cover to pro-amnesty candidates. The PAC, though, was unable to raise any funds in the first quarter after it formed.

The Republican establishment picked Curbelo to give the State of the Union response in Spanish, and approved of Curbelo’s remarks in which he called for “permanent immigration reform.” Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) delivered the English response and did not even mention Obama’s executive amnesty, merely vowing that Republicans would fight executive overreach.
