New York police arrested the mother of a Staten Island high schooler for allegedly threatening to blow up her daughter’s school when the teen failed a final exam needed to graduate last week.

Police say that on February 3, Karen Shearon, 48, threatened a guidance counselor over the phone after she was told that her daughter failed the Regents exam at Susan Wagner High School.

According to the police complaint, Shearon told the counselor, “I am going to blow up the school.”

The Department of Education told the media that the school immediately notified the police of the threat.

“Safety and security of students and school staff is always [a] top priority,” the Education Department official said.

CBS New York, however, reports that Shearon said that school officials are “liars” and that she never made any such threat.

A spokesman for the district attorney reported that the parent was arrested and charged with misdemeanor aggravated harassment on Thursday, February 5.
