41% of NH Primary Voters Say Jeb Bush’s Views on Immigration ‘Deal-Killer’

Though Jeb Bush has a narrow lead in the most recent New Hampshire presidential poll, 41% of New Hampshire GOP primary voters said his views on immigration would be a “deal-killer.”

When informed that “Jeb Bush supports allowing undocumented immigrants to stay in this country,” 41% of respondents in the Saint Anselm College/Bloomberg said it would be a “deal-killer.” The results  show that Bush, who has proclaimed that illegal immigration is an “act of love” and has doubled down on his support for comprehensive amnesty legislation, may have a lower ceiling than his potential 2016 competitors. Another 20% of GOP primary voters said Bush’s support for Common Core would be a “deal-killer.”

Illegal immigration–and specifically how it impacts working Americans–has resonated in New Hampshire in previous election cycles. In 1992, for instance, insurgent Pat Buchanan nearly defeated sitting President George H.W. Bush in the Granite State’s GOP primary, taking 37% of the vote.

The Saint Anselm poll was conducted January 31 and Feb 4 and has a margin of error of +/-4.9%
