While nearly 1 in 4 congressional Democrats had announced their intention to boycott Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, one California Democrat said that he was “honored” to have been chosen to be among the legislators who escort Netanyahu into the House chamber.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), who represents part of the San Fernando Valley in the 30th Congressional District, tweeted on Monday that he had been chosen:

Hours before, Sherman had watched Netanyahu deliver his address to the annual gathering of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and said that the speech had been “very good.”

Sherman had dropped out of a Monday forum hosted by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, which was intended to be bipartisan. Sherman objected to a controversial advertisement that Boteach had placed in Saturday’s New York Times attacking National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Rice was greeted by a cool reception at AIPAC Monday evening.

Among California’s 53 Representatives, six–Karen Bass (37th), Lois Capps (24th), Barbara Lee (13th), Zoe Lofgren (19th), Jerry McNerney (9th), and Mike Thompson (5th)–are boycotting. Both Senators are attending.
