Gov. Mike Pence on Religious Liberty Law: Needs ‘A Clarification, But Also a Fix’

“I believe in my heart of hearts that no one should be mistreated because of who they are, who they love or what they believe,” Indiana Gov. Mike Pence says. “We have a perception problem here,” he added, “We intend to correct that.”

Pence was discussing his state’s new religious liberty law with reporters at a news conference Tuesday. He says he has come to the conclusion that it would be helpful to move legislation this week that makes it clear that this law does not give businesses the right to deny services to anyone. “I believe this is a clarification, but also a fix,” he stated.

“We want to make it clear that Indiana is open to business.”

Pence says he’s pleased to have signed the law last week. “I stand by the law,” Pence touted.

He also said he never thought there would be this amount of controversy surrounding the law, as it simply mirrors federal legislation signed by President Bill Clinton more than 20 years ago.
