Premature Election: Sanchez Retracts Senate Announcement

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) inadvertently revealed her plans to run against Attorney General Kamala Harris in a bid for retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer’s (D-CA) seat on Tuesday, then quickly changed course suggesting her campaign “mistakenly” sent an email to her supporters. The announcement was quickly retracted.

“Together we will win,” said the email, which was acquired by the Sacramento Bee. It said she and her family would be officially announcing her candidacy on Thursday at an 11 a.m. press conference at the Santa Ana Train Station.

Shortly after the premature email was sent out, Democratic campaign veteran Bill Carrick issued a statement saying “Quite a lot of people may have gotten it by mistake. But it was a mistake,” notes the Bee.

Sanchez’s Thursday announcement would have come the day before the annual California Democrats Convention in Anaheim. If she does, in fact, decide to make a bid for Boxer’s Senate seat, Sanchez will have more than a formidable challenge, particularly as Harris has already raised $2.5 million in the first quarter of this fiscal year.

Harris is so far the only person to formally announce her candidacy. There have been numerous reports of Democrats in the Latino community in particular searching for an alternative. Thus far, former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has declined to run.
