Sen. Joe Manchin: More Gun Control Needed in Wake of Charleston Attack

On June 23, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) suggested more gun control is needed in the wake of the Charleston attack, but he made clear he will not bring it up until he is sure he has rounded up the necessary votes.

Manchin talked about working with Pat Toomey (R-PA) to secure the gun control, in the same way that the two worked together in their failed bid for gun control in the wake the heinous attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School.

According to The Washington Post, Manchin said, “We want to make sure we have the votes. Pat’s going to have to, and I’ll work with him, to get some of our colleagues on the Republican side.”

Toomey said the same thing a different way: “What I’m trying to figure out is, is there something that could get the support of the 60 votes that we would need in the Senate. Joe Manchin was and is a great partner and someone I will continue to work with, and I’m open to exploring what is possible.”

Toomey added, “If we stay at it I think we’ll find a way to make progress.”

The two gun control advocates were together for a reception where Toomey was receiving a reward from Sandy Hook Promise for his gun control efforts.
