On Sunday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the June 17 attack on Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church highlights the need to crack down on gun shows.

Did suspected gunman Dylann Roof get his gun from a gun show? No. But Schumer contends that the Charleston attack should an impetus to a requirement for background checks for every firearm purchased at a gun show anyway.

Ironically, Roof bought his gun at a gun store and passed a background check to do so. Schumer did not mention this. But he did say the Charleston attack somehow shows the need for new gun trafficking legislation.

According to the New York Daily News, Schumer is pushing “three components of ‘common-sense’ legislation.” These include, “increasing the strength of gun background checks, particularly to weed out mentally ill individuals; requiring background checks at gun shows, and cracking down on the flow of guns from the South to cities in the Northeast.”

Not one of these proposals, even if they had been law, would have prevented the attack in Charleston.
