Donald Trump on John McCain POW Remarks: Veterans Who Don’t Get Captured ‘Get No Credit’

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump doubled down Sunday on comments he made about Arizona Sen. John McCain earlier this weekend, in which he said McCain was a war hero simply because “he was captured.”

“I’m very disappointed in John McCain, because the vets are horribly treated in this country,” Trump told ABC This Week‘s Marta Raddatz on Sunday. “I’m fighting for the vets, I’ve done a lot for the vets.”

Trump added that the veterans he’s met on the campaign trail are treated like “third class citizens.”

“He’s (McCain) done nothing to help the vets, and I will tell you they are living in hell,” Trump added.

The candidate said he was upset by McCain calling the thousands of attendees at his Phoenix rally earlier this month “crazies:” “And frankly, I think he owes them an apology.”

“People that fought hard and weren’t captured and went through a lot, they get no credit,” Trump continued. “Nobody even talks about them. They’re like forgotten, and I think that’s a shame,if you want to know the truth.”

Trump said his previous comments were taken out of context: “In the report from Sharyl Attkisson, it said, four times, I said, ‘He’s a hero,’ but people choose little, selective pieces. If you read what I say, or if you watch what I say, which is even better, you’ll say that there was nothing wrong.”
