CNN Poll: Majority of Americans Want Congress to Reject Iran Deal

A new CNN/ORC poll released Tuesday suggests that the majority of Americans want Congress to reject the Iran deal negotiated by President Barack Obama. Of the 1,017 adults surveyed by telephone July 22-25, 52% want the Iran deal rejected, and 44% want it approved.

The public expressed opposition to the Iran deal even though President Obama’s own approval ratings continue their modest recovery, with 49% approving and 47% disapproving. Obama has frequently argued that the only alternative to the deal on the table is war with Iran.

Democrats and Americans under the age of 35 tended to support the Iran deal, while Republicans and adults over the age of 35 opposed it. Women opposed the deal slightly more strongly than men. The margin of error in the poll was 3%.

The poll results are a significant blow to the Obama administration, which has struggled to defend the details of the deal as it has faced questions from Congress and the public. Last week, the revelation of two secret “side deals” between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran deepened concerns.
