On July 29, Baltimore counted its 42nd homicide of the month, tying the “historic high” reached in May of this year.

May was Baltimore’s deadliest month since August 1990, when the city first hit 42 homicides in a month.

According to CBS Baltimore, 42 homicides occurred in May. That figure abated somewhat and fell to 29 in June, but it surged again in July.

In total, “there have been 186 homicides in Baltimore so far this year,” which represents “a nearly 60 percent increase over the same time last year.”

Violence in the city increased following the April 19 death of Freddie Gray. Riots initially resulted, gaining national attention, and violence has continued in the form of shootings and murders, with no end in sight.

Interestingly, Democrat presidential hopeful Martin O’Malley is running on the gun control policies he pushed to reduce crime during his years as mayor of Baltimore and governor of Maryland. He is now calling for a ban on the sale of assault weapons, the formation of a national gun registry, and laws requiring gun owners to lock their guns inside their homes.
