Alleged Gang Member Sets Fire, Shoots Responding NY Firefighter

On August 14 an alleged gang member reportedly started a fire to avoid capture by US Marshals and then shot an FDNY lieutenant who responded to the fire.

The lieutenant was shot in the “buttocks” and is listed in “serious but stable condition.”

According to NBC 4 New York, the alleged gang member is 38-year-old Garland Tyree. He holed up in a Staten Island apartment and was believed to be affiliated with “the Nine Trey Gangsters chapter of Bloods street gang.” He “allegedly set the fire before U.S. Marshals and NYPD cops came to cuff him on a federal warrant for violating parole.”

Tyree was released from prison in July 2014 and “has 18 prior arrests.”

Law enforcement was able to make contact with Tyree around 7:40 AM and negotiators were trying to talk with him until a shootout around 11:45 AM left Tyree dead.

Authorities believe Tyree put a post on Facebook at 6 AM Friday morning that said, “Today I die.”
