Flashback: Virginia Tech Attack, April 16, 2007

Following news of the August 26 deaths of Allison Parker and Adam Ward via an alleged attack by Vester Lee Flanagan, Ward’s alma mater Virginia Tech University expressed condolences, lamenting the fact that such a violent death had befallen the Virginia Tech family again.

According to CNN, Virginia Tech issued the following statement: “It is shocking and deeply saddening for this community to be again struck by gun violence. We deplore this senseless violence, now seemingly commonplace in our society.”

On April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 innocents on Virginia Tech’s campus with a handgun for which he had passed a background check. He wounded 17 others.

ABC News reported that Cho’s attack began in a dorm room, where he shot and killed two people. He then went to his own dorm room, left a note saying, “You caused me to do this,” then went to a classroom and killed 30 people.

On April 18, 2007, the Chicago Tribune reported that Cho mailed NBC News a package prior to the attack, containing photos and documents, with a return name on the package being “Ishmael.” He spoke in the past tense in all the documents knowing that NBC News would not receive or view them until the heinous attack had been carried out.

The package Cho sent contained an “1,800 word diatribe” in which Cho expressed “resentment and a desire to get even.” In one place he wrote, “You had 100 billion chances and ways to have avoided today but you decided to spill my blood.  You forced me into a corner and gave me only one option. The decision was yours. Now you have blood on your hands that will never wash off.”

After killing 32 people Cho took his life.
