Gun Control Group Sees ‘Opportunity’ in Vester Flanagan Shooting: ‘Our Own Eric Garner Video’

In the wake of the heinous attack captured during a live TV interview on August 26, Michael Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety says the incident provides them with “opportunity” in that they now have a snippet that can serve as their “own Eric Garner video.”

Everytown spokesperson Erika Soto Lamb made clear that the gun control group wants to use “the video to spark outrage similar to that prompted by footage of the death of Eric Garner.”

In fact, the Huffington Post reports that Everytown was already sharing the video just hours after the lives of WDBJ-TV reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were taken.

HuffPo reports that Parker and Ward’s colleagues asked that the video not be shared. On the morning of the attack, WDBJ-TV meteorologist Brent Watts tweeted: “Our WDBJ crew was literally ambushed this morning. Please DO NOT share, or post the video.” But Everytown spokesperson Lamb simply responded by saying, “We mean no disrespect to [the victims]. Our aims are that no other Americans know this experience firsthand. Our decision to do this was not made lightly.”

HuffPo reports that Lamb said:

We’ve previously lamented not having our own ‘Eric Garner video’ that really shows Americans how gun violence is affecting all of us. This unfortunate tragedy provides us that opportunity to widen the conversation and call for action.
