George Takei Promotes Massive LGBT Gala In New York With Obama

Star Trek’s George Takei, one of the most vocal celebrities promoting LGTB rights, is hosting a massive fundraiser in New York City for the Democratic party featuring President Obama.

“Decades of hard work and passion have brought us where I always knew we could go — to a place where love is love, and marriage equality is the law of the land,” Takei writes in an email to Democratic donors.

The gala will take place in New York on September 27, billed as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for supporters of President Obama and the Democratic Party to celebrate the Supreme Court ruling in favor of gay marriage earlier this summer.

“After the Supreme Court’s landmark marriage equality ruling in June, we have a lot to celebrate,” Takei writes. “And I don’t know about you, but I want to thank the President in person for his continued support of the LGBT community.”

The DNC is promoting a contest for the event allowing small donors to win tickets to the fundraiser and meet President Obama. Abby Wambach of the U.S. women’s soccer team is also expected to attend.

“There’s an idea from Star Trek that I’ve always appreciated: ‘Infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’” Takei writes. “What this means to me is that, whether out in space or here on Earth, there’s no set prescription for how to live our lives. We are all unique, and we should celebrate our differences.”

Takei, who married his partner in 2008, has vocally criticized opponents of same-sex marriage.

Last week he challenged Americans supporting Kentucky clerk Kim Davis declaring that she was “no hero to be celebrated” because she “broke her oath to uphold the Constitution.”

He also apologized in July after calling Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas “a clown in blackface” for ruling against same-sex marriage.

Takei also endorsed President Obama for his re-election campaign, encouraging Asian-Americans to remember World War II relocation camps when going to the polls.
