Heritage Action: Boehner Resignation Shows People’s Voices Reaching D.C.

House Speaker John Boehner’s resignation is an indication that the American people are being heard in the Washington, Heritage Action’s chief executive officer Michael Needham says.

“Americans deserve a Congress that fights for opportunity for all and favoritism to none,” Needham said. “Too often, Speaker Boehner has stood in the way. Today’s announcement is a sign that the voice of the American people is breaking through in Washington.”

Friday morning Boehner announced to the House Republican conference in a closed-door meeting that he will step down at the end of October. According to reports the surprise announcement was unknown even to Boehner’s number two, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), until shortly before he announced his intentions to all the conference.

Heritage Action has been a force against Boehner, pushing against the Speaker as the organization encouraged more aggressive tactics for conservative causes. Needham wants a conservative to replace the Ohio lawmaker.

“Now is the time for a principled, conservative leader to emerge. Heritage Action will continue fighting for conservative policy solutions and we look forward to working with the new leadership team,” he said.

Attendees at the Values Voters Summit cheered Boehner’s resignation when GOP presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) announced it to the crowd.
