Assistant Principal Prevents School Shooting by Tackling Alleged Gunman

On September 30, Harrisburg High School Assistant Principal Ryan Rollinger heard a gun shot in the principal’s office, ran toward the sound, and tackled the alleged gunman before any other shots could be fired.

The incident occurred at Harrisburg, South Dakota, around 10 a.m.

According to the Argus Leader, “a student entered the building at about 10 a.m. Wednesday and went to the principal’s office” and a struggle ensued between Principal Kevin Lein and the student. During the struggle Lein was shot in the arm and Rollinger quickly entered the office and tackled the alleged gunman.  Athletic director Joey Struwe also entered the office and helped hold the gunman down until police arrived.

Lein is in the hospital, where he is listed in stable condition with what the Associated Press described as “a flesh wound.” Rollinger “is being heralded as a hero.”

No students were harmed and no information on the gunman has been released, other than reports that he too was as a student.

The gunman is in police custody.
