**UPDATE** The Daily Mail reports that an “all clear” has been declared: “Virginia Commonwealth University has given students the all clear to return to business as normal after issuing an alert about a possible gunman near campus Friday morning.”

Original story below:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Commonwealth University has told students to avoid part of its campus because of a possible armed person, though police say they haven’t found anyone matching that description.

The school’s website posted an alert on its website Friday morning.

James Mercante, a spokesman for the Richmond Police department, says police received a call of a possible armed person heading toward campus just before 10 a.m.

Mercante says police responded and did not find anyone matching that description.

He added that it is “perfectly legal” in Virginia to carry a weapon openly.
