Rival groups began shooting at each other in a parking lot at Northern Arizona University (NAU), leaving one dead and three wounded.

According to the Associated Press, NAU Police Chief JT Fowler said 18-year-old Steven Jones is the suspect now in custody for the shooting, which occurred on October 9 at approximately 1:20 a.m. in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Mountain View Hall dormitory is located near the parking lot where the fight occurred. Students who heard the gunshots thought they were simply hearing firecrackers. Maria Gonzalez was in Mountain View and said, “I was studying for an exam so I looked out the window and see two people running, and that’s when I realized they weren’t fireworks.” She added, “They were actually gunshots.”

NAU police did not put the campus on lockdown because there was no broader threat to other students.

Students wounded in the fight were taken to Flagstaff Medical Center. Their conditions were not reported.
