LAS VEGAS – The Democratic candidates have arrived in Las Vegas for Tuesday night’s kickoff presidential primary debate, which will pit scandal-plagued front-runner Hillary Clinton against surging socialist Bernie Sanders and long-shot opponents Martin O’Malley, Lincoln Chafee, and Jim Webb.

Images of Sanders and Clinton flashed on the electronic billboard outside the Wynn Hotel on the Vegas strip Monday night, interchangeable from the nearby marquee advertisements for Penn and Teller, Donny and Marie, and Elton John.

Will Socialist Sanders’ billing as a veritable prizefighter on the glitzy strip, in the city at the heart of American capitalism, inspire him to step up his game in the debate? Or will Clinton, the betting favorite, pull out a victory?

“Face to face, for the first time,” the billboard read.

Clinton spent the eve of the debate joining union protesters in a demonstration outside Trump Hotel, which towers over the Nevada city just as its namesake looms in the background of the Democratic nominating process, always a factor in the distance.

Additionally, Joe Biden is considering jumping into the race, and the candidates will have to reckon with the idea of his potential candidacy.

Expect the candidates to gang up on front-runner Clinton. And expect Clinton to try to position herself as a more likable presence on the political stage.
